Makoto has been in Alberta two times previously and has performed in over 20 venues across our province.

  3. Makoto Sakurada Concert
  4. July 16, 2019

On March 11th 2011 Makoto was in Japan when the "Great East Japan earthquake" struck. At the time of the quake and the tsunami that followed, Makoto was on the north east coast visiting friends and family. He had just started up the mountain on his way home to Towada City. Makoto witnessed first hand the magnitude of the quake and saw the ocean rise to the perilous tsunami which ravaged the area he had just been at. Friends and family perished in a second. Full of compassion for those that succumbed to the tragedy and for the survivors, Makoto felt he had to do something to raise the spirits of those who were forced from their homes. He set out to provide his music as a comfort. This selfless effort went on for six months. One day, when he was back in Towada City, word was received that emergency supplies had arrived. To the amazement of Makoto, when the ship container was opened, the relief packages were labeled as coming from Alberta!

In 2012 Makoto was inspired to come to Alberta and perform free concerts throughout the province on his "Thank you Alberta Tour"! These concerts began in Jasper and zig zagged down to his final concert in Lethbridge.

Makoto is a song writer, recording artist and very talented musician. He is a regular performer on Japan National Television. Last year, he was honored to have performed at Carnegie Hall, in New York.

On July 16th at 7:00PM Makoto performs at the Yates Memorial Theater in Lethbridge.

FOR ADVANCE TICKETS, PLEASE CALL 403-330-6119 Admission is by donation. You will enjoy a high energy concert which will have the audience cheering for more! *On July 20th, (7:00PM) Makoto will perform at the Calgary Cardel Theatre, once again, admission is by donation.

  11. 40th Annual “Ice Breaker Road Race
  12. April 27th and 28th, 2019

Members of the Lethbridge Twinning Society (LTS) along with the Japanese Taiko Group, “Hibikiya” travelled to our Sister City, Great Falls, Montana to participate in the 40th Annual “Ice Breaker Road Race”.

We were graciously welcomed by members of the City of Great Falls, Advisory Committee on International Relations. (ACIR). ACIR set up a venue for Hibikiya to perform on Saturday afternoon at the Holiday Village Mall. Hibikiya played for almost an hour and many residents of Great Falls had the opportunity of enjoying the performance. After the performance, we were invited to the home of one of the ACIR members where we were treated with great western hospitality, food and a wonderful visit. Members of LTS had taken a Canadian Flag that was donated to them by our Member of Parliament, Rachael Harder and we presented the flag to the ACIR. On Sunday morning, we woke up to a blizzard! Not an ideal day for a “road race” but none the less we were there! Hibikiya set up in the Great Falls, Civic Centre and began performing before the assembling crowd at noon. Hibikiya played hourly for 30 minutes each time and presented four performances. Organizers of the Great Falls Ice Breaker Road Race have already requested Hibikiya to come down for next year’s Ice Breaker Road Race! As for the Road Race this year, due to icy road ways, we decided not to do any of the running rather we participated in the “one mile” run/race this year…. we came home with no sprains or broken bones! Special thank you to the City of Great Falls, Parks and Recreation Department along with the ACIR for treating us so kindly!

L-R Charity Jacobson and Sandra Erickson from ACIR graciously receive the Canadian flag from the LTS. (Thank you MP Rachael Harder for donating the flag to us)
